Board of Directors
GJJS Foundation President Al Greir
I am very exited to see this program unfold here in Parksville. This program will help wayward youth make the right choices in life and go down a very rewarding and happy road that will lead to a great deal of satisfaction and self confidence.
I am even more exited about our very highly trained staff in Joe Friede, Jeremy Buerge and Glen Moffat. These three gentlemen will have a tremendous impact on those youth who they touch in this program.
The youth we are focused on are the one I call "fringe players". I was fortunate to be involved in sports of one kind or another all my life, and learned to compete at a high level with a great deal of respect for others around me. Unfortunate for many dark reasons the fringe players are those who follow their peers who have gone down the wrong road. This is a road of crime, destruction and vandalism- at the end of the daythey have no self worth, and end up on the wrong side of the law.
By personal contact and communication, this program will take many of these youth and turn their lives around in short order:
Supporting this program the City of Parksville has taken a huge positive step in curbing many of the problems they now face.

Message (Nov.1, 2010) on topic Canadian MMA competitions involving Youth:
Hi Everyone. I have trained youth and children in martial arts. There was NO CONTACT with this age group for many reasons. I did attend turnaments where "semi contact" was allowed and I did not support that either. As far as I am concerned there is nothing worse than watching a child in a ring with another child, tears streaming down their faces and their parents screaming from the sidelines to "hit him again". Children do not have the capacity to understand that they do not have to do something that their internal self is telling them not to do when they have their parent or coach telling them to continue.
Youth also have limited capacity to have control over their aggression or their homones. In order to be appropriate this type of event needs the informed consent of the youth. Youth are still growing into themselves physically and mentally at this stage of their lives and do not have the skills that would enable them to give informed consent. They are by definition a child and therefore not able to give consent.
So I absolutely do not support children or youth participating in MMA.
Just my thoughts.
Sue
I am happy to support and promote the GJJS program that encourage our youth to stop the violence. Too long in Parksville have we lamented about the youth in our community and the problems that they cause. Now we have a concrete program that is tailored for the youth in our community who have been marginalized by various factors in their lives. This program provides a safe environment for them to develop greater self esteem and self confidence which in turn provides them with tools to avoid getting into trouble because of peer pressure or boredom. With this exiting program Sensei Joe Friede and Sensei Jeremy Buerge, not only challenge the youth physically, they challenge their belief and value systems and provides them with a sense of belonging in a positie way. From my perspective it is time the City of Parksville invested in all of our youth and as a City Councillor I am fully supportive of this program and look forward to seeing our youth become more productive members of our community.
Board of Director Glen Moffat
I am very impressed and supportive of the new GJJS program, which encourages youth in our community to seek alternate ways of dealing with violence. This program has been designed to present youth in our communities with viable options as to how to deal with violence, bullying and how to effectively manage aggressive behaviour by using verbal intervention skills as a primary option to deal with problematic situations.
The GJJS program also teaches various techniques on how to deal with Anxious, Verbally Aggressive and Physically Aggressive individuals. This program has already provided troubled youth in our community with viable and positive alternatives in how effectively resolve matters in a non -violent manner.
As a retired member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Police Hief at Oceanside RCMP Detachment I want to lend my sincere support to this very worthwhile endeavor. The program, which has been designed by Sensei Joe Friede and Sensei Jeremy Buerge is very innovative and deals with common issues faced with today's youth. From my perspective, the GJJS program is a huge step in the right direction in promoting safety, respect and accountability of troubled youth in all communities that we live in.

VIU MBA Student Alec Kwan
We are very happy that Alec Kwan had joined our organization in 2010, to help us build and structure the business end of our GJJS Charity.
We got connected with Brook Pearce from VIU in Nanaimo who brought us together - what a great experience.
Alec was a perfect addition to our team and we successful brought our BC Pilot project from a blue print into action.
Like Founder Joe Friede, Alec fell in love with Canada and came 2 Years ago from China to achieve his Master Degrees in business. He is a AAA student, who already left his marks on Nanaimo Campus.
We want to thank Ron McLeeod, MISTIC Business Coach, who made that all happening and wish Alec all the best on his future pathways!!
